Sitka Tribe researchers study Herring eggs and egg distribution

Traditionally, the eggs of herring of Sitka Sound herring congregate on the branches of hemlock trees in spring. Scientists are able to determine how far the eggs travel, and the distance they lay when they’re shared. Research suggests that around 85 percent of the sitaka eggs laid are. Researchers are currently studying recipients and harvesters of herring eggs in an attempt to determine the spread and impacts it can have on the local ecosystem.

Harvester surveys have shown the eggs shared in places as far as Barrow and Bethel as well as Seattle and Hawaii. How much of this sharing is unknown. The Sitka Tribe researchers are continuing to study this phenomenon to learn more about how herring eggs move through the air when they are shared.
